This is the biggest thing I have built for Voxtrona, and easily the longest. 4.0 rebuilds the audio path around a proper studio console, adds spatial rendering with optional head tracking, and makes the app quicker by indexing your library instead of scanning it every single launch. It has taken months of evenings to get here.

🔄 What's new in 4.0.7005

This is the build that shipped. These are the things I fixed and added in build 4.0.7005, on top of 4.0.7004. None of it was in the last set of notes.

↩️ Picks up exactly where you left off

Resume finally works properly, and this one had bothered me for months. Close Voxtrona — force-stop it if you like — and it comes back to the track you were on, at the position you were at, with your whole queue intact. It used to be switched off out of the box, and even switched on it did not survive a force-stop. It is on by default now, and still yours to turn off in Settings.

🔍 A search screen that's useful before you type

The search screen used to be an empty box until you typed something, which always felt like a wasted screen. Now three sections fill it the moment you open it, built entirely from what is already on your device, so there is nothing to wait for.

• Continue listening — tracks you started and didn't finish, showing how far in you got, and resuming right there rather than starting over.
• Your artists — the artists you actually play most, one tap away.
• Jump back in — the songs, albums, artists and playlists you were last looking at.

🎬 Video

• Videos start noticeably faster — a video was doing the same preparation work twice over, once for the picture and once for the sound, when a single pass had already fetched both. Now it does it once.
• Video preloading — only the audio of an upcoming video was being loaded ahead. The video itself now gets prepared too, sized to match what a video stream actually needs.

🔧 Playback reliability

• No more phantom connection problems — scrubbing quickly through a track with a large cache could leave that song broken, reporting a network error that wasn't real and staying broken until you cleared the entire cache. Fixed at the root, and if a track ever does end up in a bad state it now repairs itself instead of waiting for you to wipe everything.

⚡ Smoother, especially on older phones

• Noticeably lighter on older devices — a full-screen blur was being computed on every frame, behind every screen, and drawing nothing at all. It's gone, the animated background draws in a single pass instead of four, and it stops animating entirely when the app isn't in front of you. The look is unchanged — only the cost.
• Home behaves itself — it opens at the top instead of part-way down, and it no longer appears to jump while the rest of the feed arrives. Your place is kept when you come back from an album or artist.
• Library, favourites and downloads open faster on large libraries.
