Voxtrona 4.6: sharing, Play on and Chromecast
Here’s everything that changed since 4.5.7025. I rebuilt sharing, added a Play on button that sends Voxtrona to any output or a Chromecast, and fixed the crash that turned up most often. Four of the new features came straight from your reviews.
You can get 4.6 now as a direct download from the download page. Google Play is still on 4.5 for now, and 4.6 will be there soon.
Share, rebuilt
- Six new cards, swiped between: Glow, Now Playing, Halo, Poster, Liner Notes and Vinyl.
- Glow: the lyric lights up as if being sung.
- Now Playing: the progress bar sits at the real time of the chosen line.
- Halo: the cover ringed by a pattern generated from the song itself, different for every song.
- Shapes and colours: Story, Post, Square or Wide, coloured from the artwork, Night or Paper.
- Lyrics: pick up to four lines; the line playing right now is picked for you.
- Sticker: on a Story, the card can float over a blurred cover, like Apple Music’s WhatsApp cards.
- The page: the background takes the song’s colours, and it has Share image, Share link and copy-link buttons.
Play on and Chromecast
- A new Play on button on Now Playing lists your real outputs: the phone, Bluetooth earbuds by name, wired, USB and HDMI. Picking one moves only Voxtrona’s sound.
- Chromecast speakers and TVs appear in the same list. Playback carries on from the same second, and stopping brings it back to the phone.
- The volume slider is now the phone’s media volume, so it moves with the volume keys.
- On desktop, which is still in development, Play on lists your computer’s sound outputs.
One style for the player’s sheets
- The Sound sheet (spatial audio, streaming quality, output) now uses the same container and rows as Play on, instead of its own glass panels.
Spotify Canvas
- The canvas is prepared as soon as the song starts, so it appears as Now Playing opens, the first time and every time after.
- The right canvas and Spotify lyrics now match the song; the old lookup often grabbed the first search result instead.
- Live streams no longer search Spotify over and over.
New features from user requests over reviews
- Download songs you like (Settings → Audio): liking a song downloads it, and switching it on fetches songs you liked before.
- Audio, not videos, in radio (Settings → Playback). This also fixes songs that were silently missing from radio queues.
- Sync follows to YouTube (Settings → YouTube). Unfollowing an artist also stops their release notifications.
- Last.fm (Integrations): scrobbles after half the track or four minutes of real listening; plays made offline are sent later, and likes become loved tracks.
Crash and freeze fixes
- Fixed the most common crash, which hit when lyrics were sent and voted on at the same moment.
- Fixed the freeze at launch caused by checking the downloads list.
- Fixed freezes while long playlists load.
- The glass and moving background now start a moment after launch, so weaker phones don’t stall on the first frame.
- media3 updated to 1.9.4. I had one ExoPlayer crash report with no detail to trace, so I’m keeping an eye out for it.
Desktop (still in development)
- Downloads keep going when you leave the page, show their progress, and half-finished files are never played.
- Old canvas videos no longer keep running in the background.
Smaller fixes
- The YouTube “Log out” button on the Integrations page did nothing; it works now.
- What’s New is updated for 4.6.
